Dr. Rose Marie Joyce is retiring after four years of serving as President of Rio Hondo College. Joyce had been instrumental in moving the campus building program forward and accomplished her goals for the college in collaboration with the Board of Trustees.
Joyce said that she believes she is leaving the college with strong leadership in the board and although she feels that "the time is right" for her to retire, it is apparent that serving as President of Rio Hondo has had a positive impact on her life.
"Grateful, is my strongest feeling about having worked here at Rio Hondo College," said Joyce, "It was such a pleasure to build on the strengths of the college in several areas such as community relations, the building program, instructional programs and resource development."
Dr. Joyce began her position as president in 2002 and has worked in education for a total of 43 years. Originally, Joyce had been President of Gavilan Community College in the San Francisco Bay area.
She moved back to Southern California to work at Rio Hondo College, which was a promotional step for Joyce since the college is a much larger campus.
Rio Hondo had many premier programs when Dr. Joyce first came to the college, which she is very proud of.
"Our Board encouraged us to increase the student participation from the cities that we serve so that our communities would benefit," said Joyce, "The last five years we have had a strong focus on outreach to the cities that we serve."
The proudest memory that Dr. Joyce recalls is the passage of the Bond in March of 2004.
"It was totally a team effort with administrators, faculty, staff, and students all working hard to make our vision, building access and excellence a reality," said Joyce.
Dr. Joyce is very confident that she will be leaving the college in the hands of very capable staff.
Rio Hondo's newly appointed interim President Manuel Baca, professor of political science, will be starting Jan. 1. Baca expressed his interest in having the college reach its goals and having the college participate in reaching those goals.
Dr. Joyce is pleased with Baca's appointment as president and is confident in the administrative leadership at Rio Hondo.
"We have a committed Board of Trustees and a very talented administrative, faculty and classified staff that will effectively and wisely carry out the facilities master plan," said Joyce.
