Hundreds of students from Los Angeles County high schools will be competing in Rio Hondo's 32nd Annual Regional Drafting/CADD/GIS Contest, taking place on campus from March 5-7.
The contest is coordinated through the ACEDD-GIS Program (Architecture / Civil / Engineering Design Drafting and GIS), and is familiar among high school drafting and design teachers. Students with superlative skills in drafting and design are typically the ones most drawn in the program.
The competition consists of different categories including: Basic Mechanical Drafting, Advanced Mechanical Drafting, Basic Architectural Drawing, Advanced Architectural Drawing, Mechanical CADD, Architectural CADD or Basic GIS.
Rio Hondo Board of Trustees president Angela Acosta-Salazar, mentioned that contest is a great opportunity for the younger high school crowd to come to Rio Hondo and check out the program that is offered.
Upon arriving students will be given three hours to complete the task assigned using Rio Hondo's state-of-the-art equipment.
In order to ensure fair judging entries are left anonymous by eliminating contestant names and schools.
Judging is done by Rio Hondo students under the supervision of Rio Hondo faculty.
The award ceremony will take place March 7 in the Wray Theatre.
Winners will be recognized or their efforts with plaques and merchandise prizes.
Ted Martinez, Superintendent/ President of Rio Hondo College agrees that the ACEDD-GIS program at Rio Hondo does an exemplary job at preparing its students for jobs after they graduate as well as preparing them to transfer to universities.
One of the main goals for this event is to encourage the development of skills that students may need when seeking a career in these particular fields.
After attaining these skills some students often go on to study architecture, civil, or engineering design drafting at Rio Hondo.
There are more than 500 Rio Hondo students currently enrolled in the program that benefit from being able to use cutting edge technologies like Rapid Prototyping, 3D computer modeling and animation, and G.I.S.
Students interested in receiving more information about the program should contact Jay Sunyogh, Contest Coordinator at (562) 692-0921 ext. 3911or at jsunyogh@riohondo.edu
