A small electrical fire broke out on campus Monday afternoon according to news sources. The college Marketing Director, Susan Herney said the fire came from charred wires on the roof of a building in the warehouse area near the South Road.
The fire was confined to that area alone and students and classes were unaffected. The all clear was given at 1:30 pm, only a half an hour after the incident was reported.
In response to possible fire hazards such as last Mondays fire, the city of Monrovia and Rio Hondo have decided to allow a fire crew from the Rio Hondo Fire Academy to base itself out of the Wilderness Station on the Cloverleaf Drive.
There will be a 20-person crew nicked named the "Roadrunner Crew" that will be composed of graduates from the academy on campus.
The dean of Rio Hondo's police and fire academy and the former Monrovia police chief, Joe Santoro, told Whittier Daily News, "Our intent with this agreement is to give them something more than just a regular classroom for their training. It would give them the entire foothills-not only in Monrovia but in Arcadia and Sierra Madre- as their lab."
Classes will be conducted in 1,000 square foot building which is small but good for their needs. The crew will assist Monrovia's Fire Department on calls if time permits and act as help for the wilderness preserve.
"They're an additional set of eyes up there, they can help us enforce the rules for the Wilderness Preserve," said Monrovia Fire Department Chief Christopher Donovaan to the Whittier Daily News. "We wouldn't be able to hire an additional crew and stock them in a wilderness station."
