If you excel or are interested in math, science, or engineering MESA is right for you.

MESA which stands for Math Engineering and Science Achievement is a program that aids to students who are involved in these areas.

The program is state wide and present in community colleges, high schools, and universities that provide support for students in various forms. Most obvious may be the academic support that is manifested through study centers where students can meet to receive help and discuss concepts.

This is especially important in these areas where students can spend hours on just a few equations, which is definitely not an easy subject.

At the high school and community college level the program works with students that are transferring to four year universities.

At the university level MESA provides help with gaining positions in the industry. Workshops are also put on to provide insight on a range of given subjects; but it goes beyond a study center.

The program does not merely provide somewhere to study, more than that actually; it provides networking. Students are able to make connections that will prove to be beneficial in the future. And it certainly is proving to be successful.

At Rio Hondo 98 percent of students involved in the program go on to transfer, and career placement rates are high as well.

Upon visiting the center for myself there definitely seemed to be a camaraderie between everyone and certainly fit the form of a "home away from home". Despite being set in a classroom with fluorescent lights and linoleum floors, there was a warm feeling in the meeting.

Even though I am not involved with these subjects the feeling at the meeting made me want to be there simply because of the friendly vibes they gave off. It was also nice to see such success and involvement in fields where other nations seem to exceed and where the United States is falling behind.

The Rio Hondo's MESA Program director Gisela Spieler-Persad, Ph. D. stated that if there was one thing she wanted to convey to the public it is that even if you are in elementary algebra but are interested in these areas you should go give MESA a look.

If further information is needed contact Gisela in S223 or email her at mesa@riohondo.edu.
