Rio Hondo bids farewell to another batch of students as they transfer to four-year universities.
It is this time of year that administrators, faculty, and staff make the final preparations for commencement in honor of the 2009 graduating class.
Where are these students heading off to? What dreams and ambitions have they set for themselves? Rio investigates.
Rio will bid farewell to approximately 1,104 students, some will obtain jobs while others will transfer off to 4-years. California community college transfer students receive first priority over other transfer applicants to California State Universities and Universities of California, who receive the majority of Rio transfers.
"I got accepted into UC-Santa Cruz on a full ride; I'm majoring in Political Science and plan to run for President of the United States in 2040," said Cristela Solorio Ruiz "My experience at Rio was full of growth. I learned a lot during my time at Rio".
"I was admitted to UCLA as an English major for Fall 2009. Being able to attend Rio Hondo College and finish the Honors Program prepared me to make my transition to a UC smoother," said Ernesto Zumaya "My overall experience at RHC was fantastic, especially since the faculty and staff cared for my higher education future."
"I'm going to California State University- Long Beach, where I plan on majoring in Communications, and eventually hope to work for ESPN," said Chris Roth "My experience was interesting, met a lot of people and learned a lot of thing."
"I'm going to California State University- Los Angeles, my major is communications. Once I complete undergraduate studies I plan to be Vice President of Communications for MTV or any other popular media based company," said Marlene Chavez "My experience while at Rio really helped me grow as a person."
If you want information on transferring, regular visits to the Transfer center and websites like assist.org can ease the transition.
Transfer students can enter as either a sophomore or transfer, depending on the amount of credits/units earned. Most commonly you transfer into the new school for the fall term, but it is possible to transfer in for spring (or winter, if it's a quarter system).
Most schools require you to be enrolled a minimum of two years at a college and obtain a minimum number of credits at their school to obtain their degree as well.
Application deadlines for fall transfer can be rolling or have deadlines ranging from late November through the summer. Most common timetable is a March application deadline for fall transfer.
