As I approach the office of Hannah Pastrano, the Student Activities Assistant, I can clearly see that I came at a busy time. There are ASB members scattered about, a potential candidate picking up an application, and other members hiding out in their cubicles.

What's all the fuss? The ASB Elections are approaching and our ASB President and Vice-President are making their agenda for the upcoming semester. Among other plans, the agenda addresses the qualifications for ASB office, increasing student involvement, the lack of recycling bins and campus security.

The ASB Elections aren't until October 6th and 7th, so it is too soon to mention any prospects despite the number of applications received. ASB will be keeping an eye on potential candidates who attend the Candidate meeting on September 22, 2009.

ASB is looking for interested students for ten senator positions to make up one governmental body. ASB Senators represent Rio Hondo at local, state, and national levels.

They participate in campus-wide committees such as: Curriculum, Fiscal Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, and Accreditation. The qualifications go beyond being responsible and hardworking; these candidates need to be balanced. "We need someone who puts academic responsibility first, especially those who are interested in executive board seats," says Vice-President Brenda Catarino. Sammy Castillo, the ASB President, adds "Sometimes your instructors are at your meeting… so if you don't do your homework and they see you at the meeting, it gets awkward."

Attendance is also a crucial factor in office. In fact, the application contains questions pertaining to academic responsibility and maintaining free time on Fridays between 11am and 3pm. In the past, there have been officers who have dropped out of office due to outside conflicts with personal matters or academics. "We are pushy about time and attendance-that's not being pushy, that's being responsible" says the Vice-President.

So what is on the agenda for current and future ASB officers? The President and Vice-President have student involvement in ASB activities as a priority.

"We want students to know that we're here for them. Don't be afraid to stop us [if you see us]. We're all students in a learning environment," says Sammy. Another issue on the agenda is the lack of recycling bins on campus.

Finally there is the concern for the safety of students on campus.

ASB definitely have a list of things to keep them busy this semester. However, in order to meet these goals, those in authority must cooperate with each other. Most importantly, students need to be aware of their resources starting with knowing the faces and names of their ASB officers.

"A lot of things happen behind the scenes" says Brenda Catarino. Just as there is a democracy within our country, there is a student democracy here at school-take advantage, vote, and be heard on October 6th and 7th.
