Praise for 'Phenomenal Women'

The goal of the recital was to pay homage to strong women featured in music and theatre. Whether these women were characters in an opera, songwriters, or servants of god, soprano vocalist Gwendolyn Wyatt elegantly narrated their stories. Her masterful singing was accompanied by both piano and guitar, and later on the bass.
Though the show was only about an hour long, it was easy to lose track of time.
The show was like musical story time that demanded the audience's attention with several engrossing tales.
The artist's passion for their instruments and for the stories they told was evident in their thoughtful performances. The songs chosen for the recital introduced some powerful operas and musicals that some had never heard of but greatly enjoyed.
Whether it was that of a woman crying for her dead husband or the cheerful calling of a strawberry vendor, it seemed that the women represented in the show were phenomenal because of their ability to endure the hardships that come with being a woman of color.
It was disappointing to see the small turn up, especially now when arts programs are suffering from lack of support.
Even more disappointing was how boisterous some of the attendees were about only showing up for extra credit.
Hopefully those who appreciated the show for its talent and its creative expression will encourage others to attend future shows put on by the arts department. Despite the audiences reasons for showing up, none can deny that "Phenomenal Women" exceeded expectations and was nothing short of beautiful.
It is highly recommended that those interested attend the upcoming concerts and theatrical performances that the arts department has to offer.
All of which are free and claim to be highly entertaining.
