Rio Hondo to host Gay Youth conference

On December 5th the Inspired Gay Straight Bisexual Youth (IGSBY) will host the third annual Pride and Education conference at Rio Hondo College.
The conference will give an opportunity for supporters of gay, lesbian, transgender and straight youth to convene and support their plight as well as provide self knowledge for attendees and supporters.
The event is open to high school and college student's ages 14 through 24, events will take place in the Campus Inn and the Learning Resource Center they are scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 3:30 p.m.
Events in the Campus Inn include a masquerade dance as well as serve free breakfast and Lunch for all attendees.
Workshops will take place in the Learning Resource Center where there are scheduled appearances by Mrs. Major a transgender woman, organizations such as the Whittier Rio Hondo Aids Project (WRAP) as well as the Liberty Hill Foundation will be present on the event.
The event will feature panels of youth's coming out stories as well give students a chance to learn their legal rights, another panel will help students deal with relationships in public and give high school students knowledge on how to build their own Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) in their high schools.
Events in the conference include free HIV testing as well as having a resource fair which will feature the Trevor Project an organization aimed at helping gay, transgender and lesbian youth prevent suicide.
Attendees will be given goodies at the end of the event. Student Trustee Julio Rene Flores says: "if I attend this event is to feel inspired and feel comfortable in your skin, to create change" another attendee Greta Cisneros from Students Without Borders says: "when I go I want to support them because this community has rights"
The previous two Igsby's conferences have been hosted at the Christopher Wahl Youth Center in Whittier and Rio Hondo will have honors of hosting the third conference.
