Rio's women's water polo ended in seventh place at the Foothill Conference Championship at Chaffey College this past Nov. 5 & 7.
While at the conference the Lady Roadrunners played three matches against Long Beach, El Camino and Los Angeles Trade Tech (LATT).
Unfortunately the Rio ladies lost their first game against Long Beach one of the finalists for the So Cal Championship with a final score of 19-2. For their second game the ladies confronted El Camino also loosing with a final score of 18-8. Coach Mike Hinze says, "We had a chance at El Camino if we were at our full strength, one of our players (Evelyn De La Torre) got injured in the Long Beach game. I think that we could have beaten them if she was there, it would have made a big difference."
For their last game the Lady Roadrunner played against LATT. Unfortunately LATT did not have sufficient players winning LATT by a forfeit.
Overall Coach Hinze says, "This season was marked by a dramatic learning swerve in our team we improved so much. I'm very impressed with their hard work, determination and sacrifice in our teammates. They all had awesome attitudes and were willing to work hard to learn."
The Conference Championship decides a spot in the playoffs, if Rio were to win the Conference Tournament that would put them in the playoffs as an automatic bid for the So Cal Championship.
Who ever wins in the Conference tournament automatically goes on the So Cal Championship. If the rest of the college teams have a good enough record they can go ahead and play for the rest of the positions as an at large bid.
Sadly this season, the women's water polo's record was not good enough to be able to go on to the So Cal Championships. The two wins they had in the season against El Camino and LATT. They beat the same teams in the conference championship.
Coach Hinze is really excited for next season's new and returning players to come in and contribute to a team that has a lot of girls returning next year.
