Russell Castaneda Calleros, Director of Government and Community Relations at Rio Hondo College, has been sworn in as a new member of the Whittier Union High School District board of trustees.
Calleros was selected among 14 other candidates to fill in the seat that became vacant back in January by Alex Morales. Morales, now a former trustee of the board, has stepped down to pursue a seat in the April 13 election for the Whittier City Council.
Calleros will serve the final twenty-two months of a four year term. The final months of Morales' term due to end November 2011.
Candidates for the position ranged from Montebello school district administrators to a professor from Cal Poly Pomona. Calleros stood out from all other individuals and on the final interview succeeded to win the board member seat.
As a board member, Calleros feels he will "now have a new avenue and still serve in education and help the board in fine work that has already been occurring at districts."
Roots in the community will help Calleros as a member of the district. He grew up in the Whittier area, receiving his diploma from California High School and now giving his own time to volunteer around the community.
Calleros has served as a member of the Whittier First Aid Coalition, Whittier Chamber of Commerce, as a mentor in the Youth Puente program, and Whittier Soroptomist Youth Forum as a facilitator.
"Rio Hondo as well as my experience volunteering has prepared me very well in this Trustee position," said Calleros. His achievements among the community have brought Calleros a long way
For 5 years Calleros has worked as a member of the Rio Hondo staff. As Director of Government and Community relations he manages to keep relationships between school and districts, government agencies, and legislators.

Transit Companies around the community partnered with Rio Hondo in Fall 2006 to give full-time students a form of free transportation. In fact, it has recently become a winner of the 2009 Bellwether in Planning, Governance, and Finance Category.
