In an effort to sponsor Women's Health Month, the Latina Leadership Network (LLN), will be holding its annual conference on March 17, the topic on the agenda will be beauty enhancements, a subject no woman will want to miss out on.

In past years, the topics for the Women's Month conference have ranged from diabetes, to managing stress, to heart disease. This year a doctor has been invited as a guest speaker to discuss tummy tucks and nose enhancements.

This event will be held on campus and is open to all students, the cost is $3.00 which will include a healthy lunch. In order to make reservations students are urged to see Liz Chavez in the career center.

The proceeds from this event and all events sponsored by LLN go toward funding scholarships provided on behalf of the organization. Typically two to three scholarships per semester are provided for students averaging $400 to $500.

LLN scholarships are presented at the Mother's Day fundraiser which will be held on May 8 from 12 to four p.m. at Pico Park, tickets will be on sale for $10.

Since its establishment in 1987, the non-profit organization has strived to uphold their vision of statement which is to form a mutual support organization that is committed to leadership development for Latinas at all levels in the California Community College system, and to promote Latin culture in addition to fostering non-sexist familial values.

Martha Carreon, humanities professor and former president of LLN, stated that, "The Latina Leadership Network is just like a community, you receive support not only financially, but emotionally…it's like a family."

Olga Arenivar, Cecelia Alvarado Kuster, Betty Cotton, Irma Alvarez, and Sharon Yaap met 23 years ago at the Great Teacher's Seminar in Santa Barbara. It was there where they expressed unanimous sentiments about the reality that Latinas were underrepresented in the California Community College system.

These women decided to take positive steps toward developing strong Latina leadership in the California Community College system as well as to increase the number of Latinas within that system.

Additionally, a positive support system for women results in the likelihood of their individual growth and reciprocation of the same treatment toward others. In effect they would be acting as role models for women.
There is an abundance of diversity among Latinas today, including background, circumstances, talents, and abilities. By embracing such diversity Latinas will be able to further the development of their leadership skills which will help them to become better leaders both now and in the future.
